The guitar-driven “This Is Not a Test” has Deschanel playing up her cute side with an entertaining mouth trumpet solo. Ward’s lo-fi production style works perfectly on “Change Is Hard,” where she sings her heart out over a pedal steel. When M. Ward shares vocals with Deschanel on the Beatles’ “I Should Have Known Better,” you’re left wishing they did more of this. But hey, there’s always Volume 2.
