Alex Woodard’s show at Knitting Factory Tuesday July 24th was an intimate look into a folksy storyteller’s way of life. Every song was prefaced with an emotional analysis and a becoming weathered expression, poetically shaded in the shadowy light of a small room. Woodard said it was the first actual venue he and his opening act Dawn Mitschele had performed at, because they’d been playing at people’s homes throughout the city. The statement says much about the nature of the music: it flows as easily from a stage as it does a living room.

The performance and the personal were inseparable. “Beautiful Mom” was a song Woodard wrote on request for a girlfriend, about how women become more beautiful as mothers. Also noteworthy was “The Table,” about a husband and wife facing cancer. He’d written it before his friends coincidentally suffered the same tragedy, thus giving the song a new sorrow.

The intimacy shaped the music, especially Mitschele’s duet on “Reno with Sarah Watkins,” which chronicles a relationship at a diner. Every song and every preface enraptured the audience and musicians alike—the vibe was the music, comforting and comfortable.
