The Design Partners RC, DPRC, debuted their Futuristic Fashion Fiend Collection with a snore on Feb. 7 at Guest House in Manhattan. Brooklyn designers Ronette Cox and Rosa Concepcion, both 22, said their third collection since 2007 was based on fashion as a safe addiction and taking ‘80s fashion to the future. Scene I of the show opened with all white ensembles reminiscent of cricket uniforms. The women models wore graphic t-shirts and tennis skirts, not the designers’ own. They were styled with big, curly ‘80s hair and white eye shadow that looked brilliant against their dark skin. And the men wore graphic t-shirts and slim jeans, not DPRC, styled with scarves and bandanas. Traditional graffiti and Asian-inspired graffiti spread across the tees and sweatshirts. And robots “danced” on machinery—wow, look at the future. One t-shirt had “addicted to retail” printed on the front, a nice slogan but no different from any other novelty tee. Scenes II and III were the same as the first, but the colors were neon pink, purple and turquoise. And the tees featured the NYC skyline. Also, the designers continued to reference hip-hop lyrics—“fly enough to touch the sky,” said another tee. While it’s quite difficult to take fashion to the future with just t-shirts, DPRC does have plans to expand the line. by Annika Harris

But with a recession looming, an addiction to fashion could be as detrimental to the pockets and health as crystal meth. Also, the fashion line featured plenty of ‘80s, but little of the future.
