White Hinterland
Ten names may be listed in the jacket of Phylactery Factory, but, when it comes down to it, White Hinterland is Casey Denal. The 22-year-old plays about 6 of the 16 instruments featured, including the upright piano, Wurlitzer, and melodica.
Denal's voice will undoubtedly draw comparison to Regina Spektor, as he tells tales of death, struggle, and pain. Throughout, her sweet, soothing voice will cushion the thematic blow and make you feel as if you have stepped into the past. Maybe even the 20s, particularly on "Lindberghs and Metal Birds" where she takes advantage of aviation symbolism with a chorus of "Leave it to Lindberghs and Metal Birds/ Keep your head out of the clouds." On the lead track, "The Destruction of the Art Deco House," Denal's voice coos over high hat and gently plucked violin that seem to perfectly compliment her voice. Throughout the album, you will hear interesting instrumentation and developed tales. Rather than simple verse/chorus setups, these tales force you to listen to make sure you've got everything.
