In Wong Kar Wai's first English-language film, mega-Grammy winner Norah Jones makes her acting debut. The film's soundtrack only includes one song by Jones, a quaint number entitled "The Story," which falls right in line with her previous jazz vocal work. Legendary musician Ry Cooder provides the bulk of the instrumental pieces on the soundtrack and, with his slide guitar, interjects funk-soul appeal into an otherwise somber collection of songs.
The rest of the choices embody a more brooding and smoky atmosphere, with tunes from sultry female vocalists Cat Power, Mavis Staples, Cassandra Wilson, and Juliette from the Los Angeles-based Hello Stranger. My Blueberry Nights has a soundtrack worth listening to, but one can only hope that it's a film worth seeing.
