| Black Mountain - In The Future |
|
Instrumentally forceful with a '70s retro impact, Black Mountain's second album is a string of songs as distinct and cohesive as a course in a large meal. In The Future begins with "Stormy High" and a burst of dark inspiration that sets the tone for some potential ruckus and destruction. But, as each track progresses, a new personality trait appears. "Angels" is much softer than its predecessor, with a lulling melody and echoing voices. Equally gentle is "Stay Free," with its guitar riffs and falsetto vocals, sounding barely folk and perfect for either a slow-dance or a long, slow day at the beach. Then there's "Queens Will Play," with a leading female vocalist that might be mistaken for PJ Harvey. Whether ark and dank in theme, or fluttery and soft in execution, In The Future is an emotional venture constructed with originality and grace. -Kaitlin Johnson
