The Ruby Suns - Sea Lion

Critics will undoubtedly make comparisons between The Ruby Suns and Architecture in Helsinki: they play pop music with a lot of instruments and hail from the Land Down Under—New Zealand for the former and Australia for the latter. On Sea Lion, however, The Ruby Suns bring together sounds and experiences from their journeys to create an album that sets the trio apart from other pop bands.

With song titles like “Kenya Dig It?” and singing “Tane Mahuti” entirely in Maori, an indigenous language that survives in New Zealand, these Kiwis have a noticeable affinity for the global community, and although they draw their inspirations from worldly travels, The Ruby Suns have a made a cohesive work of music that celebrates humanity. Essentially, Sea Lion would make a great soundtrack for a lighthearted comedy that plops an inept urbanite into the middle of a sprawling jungle.
